Ballin and Shot Callin

Tracklist at the Tumblr.

During November I spent a lot of time driving around New England, and in the car I listened to mainstream rap radio a bunch. While some of it was unlistenable drivel, there were some gems and I enjoyed the DJ techniques and the energy.

In this show, I take some hot 2011 tracks and try my hand at the format, but broadening the horizons and excluding the shit music.   In the end it spans the landscape (love that metaphor) from Major Lazer to A$AP Rocky to Little Dragon to Charles Bradley. Then, in the last 25 minutes I play 90's hip hop.

Rejuvenate the Fonk

"Don't you sweat, don't you shout, rejuvenation's what it's all about."

The Satellite Band provide us with the obligatory LL Cool J-style announcement of reemergence about mid-way through this excellent, I dare say excellent edition of Right On Radio. Now, don't get it twisted I've been showing up at that basement studio dutifully every Monday for the past three years, rocking my peers putting suckers in fear, including the last six months. I'm just appropriating the I'm gonna knock you out brass knuckles sentiment to make this, my first post on this blog in half a year, a triumphant occasion you can rally around.

This is simply a good, thick spread of funk ranging from 50's BB King to late 70s disco funk to modern Daptone gold, all topped of with some sonically and lyrically forward-thinking hip hop. The past, the present and the future all wrapped up in these sixty minutes of community radio. Don't you call this no regular jam. Track list on my tumblr.

The Message

Camp Lo were awesome. They shout out Shalamar at the start of the show. Shalamar is fresh too. So we're on the good foot. This one has the jazz, hip hop, soul, and reggae all mixed together and it works. I got a nice Dancehall block in there too.

Heed the Words of the Brother

In tribute to Gil Scott Heron, and on a lovely Memorial Day weekend, our friend DJ Brawny headed to the studio with a batch of mp3s and an armful of vinyl.

Ice Cream Man

This show has soul: classic Atlantic Soul, Daptone soul, I can't believe it's not neo-Soul, Northern Soul, Soul Jazz, Quantic Soul Orchestra. Soul for days 50 minutes. The cherry on top is 10 minutes of up-tempo 90s hip hop anthems. Aretha is here. Naughty By Nature, Badu, UMC's and Grant Green are here. It's going to be a great show.

Sandwiches

This show is sure to ignite the blogosphere.

A block of 90s hip hop nestled like lettuce tomato and onion in thick slices of funk.

Main Event

There's no theme here. This show is not an event. This show has music from Greggory Isaacs, Marvin Gaye, the Jungle Brothers, Booker T and the MGs, Lou Donaldson and Jurassic 5. Add one heady public service announcement and you know what I take it back. This show is an event.
